Understanding Copyright in Pakistan
Copyright is a legal instrument that provides creators of original works exclusive rights to control how their works are used, reproduced, distributed, and adapted. Under Pakistan’s Copyright Ordinance 1962, copyright protection is automatic upon creation but registration provides crucial prima facie evidence of ownership and date of creation.
Copyright protects the expression of ideas (not the ideas themselves) and provides protection for the lifetime of the author plus 50 years after death. For corporate works, protection lasts 50 years from publication. The Copyright Office Pakistan, established in Karachi in 1963 and now part of IPO-Pakistan, administers copyright registration and related matters.

Copyright Registration & Prosecution Services
We provide comprehensive copyright registration services for all categories of creative works under Pakistan’s Copyright Ordinance 1962, beginning with detailed analysis of works to determine appropriate classification and protection strategy. Our registration services include preparation and filing of Form-II applications with precise description of works, submission of required work samples (manuscripts, recordings, designs, etc.), and calculation and payment of appropriate fees based on work category. For literary works including books, articles, and academic publications, we ensure proper documentation of authorship, publication details, and moral rights considerations. For software and computer programs, we handle special requirements including source code submission, functionality descriptions, and protection of both literal and non-literal elements.
Our artistic work registration services cover paintings, photographs, drawings, sculptures, architectural works, and design elements, ensuring high-quality reproductions that accurately represent the creative work. We handle special considerations for artistic works used in commerce (logos, labels, packaging) which require Form-II filing with higher fees and additional commercial use documentation. For cinematographic works including films, documentaries, television programs, and animations, we manage complex submissions involving multiple rights holders (producers, directors, scriptwriters, composers) and ensure proper chain of title documentation. Our record work registration services cover musical compositions, sound recordings, podcasts, and audio works, handling per-song registrations and compilation registrations as appropriate.
We manage the complete prosecution process including responses to examination queries, handling of oppositions (filed under Form-XX), and publication requirements for artistic works. Our services include strategic timing of registrations relative to publication dates, international releases, and commercial exploitation plans. We provide expedited handling for time-sensitive works through established procedures with the Copyright Office. For works first published abroad, we handle international copyright considerations and ensure compliance with Berne Convention requirements. Our comprehensive registration services create solid evidentiary foundation for copyright ownership, enabling effective enforcement and commercialization of creative works.
Software & Digital Content Copyright Protection
We specialize in software copyright protection under Pakistan’s Copyright Ordinance 1962, providing comprehensive services for computer programs, applications, databases, and digital content. Our software copyright services begin with analysis of software architecture to identify protectable elements including source code, object code, user interfaces, database structures, and non-literal elements (structure, sequence, organization). We prepare detailed descriptions of software functionality, development history, and authorship claims, ensuring registration applications accurately capture the creative expression embodied in software. For complex software systems involving multiple developers, contractors, or open-source components, we handle authorship attribution, work-for-hire considerations, and license compatibility analysis.
Our digital content protection services cover websites, mobile applications, digital publications, online courses, multimedia content, and social media creations. We develop comprehensive protection strategies for digital works considering unique challenges including dynamic content, user-generated content, and cross-border accessibility. Our services include drafting website terms of service, privacy policies, and end-user license agreements that protect copyright while complying with data protection regulations. For digital platforms and content aggregators, we develop copyright compliance programs, digital rights management strategies, and takedown procedures that balance copyright protection with platform liability considerations.
We provide software licensing services including drafting end-user license agreements (EULAs), software-as-a-service (SaaS) agreements, development agreements, and open-source compliance programs. Our technology transfer services facilitate software commercialization through licensing arrangements, joint development agreements, and technology partnership structures. For software companies seeking investment or acquisition, we conduct intellectual property due diligence assessing copyright ownership, license obligations, and infringement risks. Our enforcement services for software and digital content include anti-piracy investigations, license compliance audits, and litigation against unauthorized copying, distribution, or modification. We stay current with evolving digital copyright issues including artificial intelligence-generated works, blockchain applications, and metaverse content protection.
Copyright Enforcement, Litigation & Anti-Piracy Actions
We provide aggressive copyright enforcement services through litigation, administrative actions, and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to protect creative works against unauthorized use, reproduction, distribution, and adaptation. Our enforcement practice begins with comprehensive monitoring of physical and digital markets to detect copyright infringement through retail surveillance, online monitoring, trade show observations, and supply chain investigations. We employ advanced digital monitoring tools for online infringement detection including web crawling, social media monitoring, and peer-to-peer network surveillance. For piracy hotspots including educational institutions, commercial establishments, and manufacturing units, we conduct undercover investigations to gather evidence of systematic copyright violations.
Our copyright litigation services include filing infringement suits in appropriate courts seeking injunctions to stop ongoing infringement, damages (actual, statutory, and punitive), accounts of profits, and delivery up or destruction of infringing copies. We have extensive experience with urgent injunction applications to prevent irreparable harm from mass piracy, particularly in publishing, software, film, and music industries. We handle complex copyright cases involving multiple defendants, jurisdictional issues, and cross-border infringement. Our services include representing clients in criminal copyright proceedings under Section 66 of the Copyright Ordinance, coordinating with law enforcement agencies for raids against piracy operations, and pursuing criminal penalties including imprisonment and fines against commercial-scale infringers.
We develop comprehensive anti-piracy strategies combining legal enforcement with technological solutions including digital rights management (DRM) systems, watermarking, fingerprinting, and access control mechanisms. Our online enforcement services include notice-and-takedown procedures under the Copyright Ordinance, domain name seizures, search engine de-indexing, and payment processor restrictions against infringing websites. We coordinate with customs authorities for border enforcement measures under Section 58, recording copyright registrations with customs databases and training officials on identifying pirated goods. For rights holders associations and collective management organizations, we develop industry-wide enforcement strategies and coordinate collective legal actions against major piracy networks. Our copyright enforcement philosophy emphasizes deterrence through visible enforcement actions while developing sustainable business models that reduce piracy incentives.
International Copyright Protection & Berne Convention
We provide comprehensive international copyright protection services leveraging Pakistan’s membership in the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works and other international copyright treaties. Our international copyright services begin with analysis of protection needs in target markets, considering factors including publication history, commercial exploitation plans, and piracy risks in different jurisdictions. We advise on automatic protection under the Berne Convention principle of national treatment, ensuring Pakistani works receive equivalent protection in other member countries without formal registration requirements. For jurisdictions with optional registration systems (like United States), we manage copyright registrations through local counsel to obtain additional legal benefits including statutory damages and attorney fees.
Our services include coordinating international copyright strategies for works with global distribution, developing phased protection approaches based on market importance and budget considerations. We handle complex international copyright issues including works created by multinational teams, co-productions between Pakistani and foreign entities, and works incorporating elements from multiple jurisdictions. For works first published in Pakistan with international potential, we advise on publication strategies that maximize Berne Convention protection while maintaining Pakistani copyright benefits. Our services include monitoring international copyright developments including treaty negotiations, legislative changes in key markets, and significant court decisions affecting international copyright protection.
We provide representation in international copyright disputes through our network of international associates, coordinating multi-jurisdictional enforcement actions against cross-border infringement. Our services include advising on international copyright licensing arrangements, distribution agreements, and co-publishing deals with foreign partners. For educational and research institutions, we handle international copyright compliance for academic publishing, open access requirements, and cross-border educational use exceptions. We stay current with evolving international copyright issues including digital exhaustion, cross-border licensing platforms, and harmonization efforts through WIPO and other international organizations. Our international copyright practice ensures comprehensive global protection for creative works, supporting international cultural exchange and commercial success in global markets.

We structure publishing agreements for literary works, recording contracts for musical works, distribution agreements for films, and software licenses for digital products. Our royalty arrangements include upfront advances, running royalties based on sales or usage, minimum guarantees, cross-collateralization provisions, and audit rights to verify royalty calculations.
Our copyright assignment services include drafting assignment deeds transferring full or partial copyright ownership, handling registration of assignments with the Copyright Office using Form-III, and addressing associated tax implications. We structure complex copyright transactions including copyright-backed financing, securitization of royalty streams, and copyright contributions to joint ventures. Our due diligence services for copyright transactions include comprehensive review of copyright chains of title, identification of encumbrances or prior licenses, verification of registration status, and assessment of infringement risks. We conduct copyright valuations for various purposes including licensing negotiations, merger and acquisition transactions, financing arrangements, and financial reporting, employing appropriate valuation methodologies considering work popularity, market potential, and comparable transactions.
We provide collective rights management services for rights holders associations including drafting collective licensing schemes, establishing royalty distribution systems, and handling disputes with users. For educational institutions, media companies, and technology firms, we develop copyright compliance programs, fair use/dealing policies, and content clearance procedures.
